Giving you confidence in your vessel

What we provide

Ultimately, in taking a boat to sea, however far, you are entrusting your life and that of your crew to the vessel and her equipment.

In thoroughly examining your craft, we aim to give confidence that it, with the right care and maintenance, is seaworthy and will bring you and your family or crew home safely.

Aside from protecting you, a survey extends protection to your financial (and often emotional) investment. A detailed technical report is produced following the survey, covering every aspect of the vessel, to give a full picture of its condition.

Optimum Marine Surveys offer a variety of services which can be tailored to suit your specific requirements. Every boat is as individual as its owner and should be treated as such.

Whether buying, selling or insuring a vessel, we hope we can be of assistance to you soon.

    Principal Surveyor: Oliver Byles

    BSc, MIIMS AMRINA

Oli’s passion for boats and boating started at a young age, from family canal boat holidays to national dinghy racing.

Before studying at University, he spent a year sailing as delivery crew. Extensively cruising the South Coast of the UK, Eastern Atlantic coastlines, and Trans-Atlantic to the Caribbean, Oli covered some 9,000 nautical miles in 12 months.

Oli studied Yacht Manufacture and Surveying (BSc Hons) at Southampton Solent University. He focussed his studies on hull design and sea-keeping through systematic tank testing and formulaic evaluation of custom built hull forms.

Post University, Oli took up a position at a renowned all-service boatyard near Exeter, delivering a wide range of repair, service and maintenance work on a variety of yachts and motorboats. The final five years here were as yard manager, overseeing the repairs department and storage facility.

Optimum Marine Surveys was founded in 2015 and in 2020 Oli’s wife Anna joined the business alongside working as a freelance journalist for the BBC. Your initial enquiry and the organisation of your inspection may be dealt with by Anna.

We predominantly work in South West England, the South Coast and Solent and South Wales but we are happy to work across Europe.

Oli is a full member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying and an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects. He is also part of the Professional Assessment Committee for the IIMS, assessing new surveyors and their membership applications.

Oli is thoroughly professional. He explained the process from start to finish, arranged all bookings with the broker and everything ran like clockwork. He delivered a comprehensive report. Thanks to Oli we bought our boat with complete clarity and confidence .
